His family controls Heidelberg Cement and generic drug company Ratiopharm.

Lately German billionaire Adolf Merckle suffered big losses last year and came under pressure to sell some assets or seek bridging loans after sellers of shares in carmaker Volkswagen AG were caught short by a stake building announcement from VW's biggest shareholder Porsche that sent the VW share price rocketing.

He was the father of four and was the world's 94th-richest person in 2008, according to Forbes magazine, and had assembled a business conglomerate with about 100,000 employees and 30 billion euros (27.3 billion pounds) in annual sales.

Millionaire by default

He inherited his fortune from his Bohemian grandfather but he grew his chemical wholesale company into Germany's largest drugs wholesaler, Phoenix Pharmahandel, with annual sales of 21.6 billion euros, according to Forbes.

He was also making money with grooming vehicles for ski slopes, a sugar refinery and one of Germany's oldest foundries.

He died rich at the age of 74 and was a lawyer by education, lived in the southwest German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg and was said to enjoy skiing and mountain climbing.

As soon as I read this story, it reminded me of the song, Richard Cory by Simon & Garfunkel. Read the lyrics and watch the video.

They say that Richard Cory owns one half of this whole town, With political connections to spread his wealth around. Born into society, a banker's only child, He had everything a man could want: power, grace, and style.

But I work in his factory And I curse the life I'm living And I curse my poverty And I wish that I could be, Oh, I wish that I could be, Oh, I wish that I could be Richard Cory.

The papers print his picture almost everywhere he goes: Richard Cory at the opera, Richard Cory at a show. And the rumor of his parties and the orgies on his yacht! Oh, he surely must be happy with everything he's got.

But I work in his factory And I curse the life I'm living And I curse my poverty And I wish that I could be, Oh, I wish that I could be, Oh, I wish that I could be Richard Cory.

He freely gave to charity, he had the common touch, And they were grateful for his patronage and thanked him very much, So my mind was filled with wonder when the evening headlines read: "Richard Cory went home last night and put a bullet through his head."

But I work in his factory And I curse the life I'm living And I curse my poverty And I wish that I could be, Oh, I wish that I could be, Oh, I wish that I could be Richard Cory.
